Section III. Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage carefully, and then check the correct answer a, b, c, or d.
Constellations are patterns of stars in the sky. Over many thousands of years, human beings living on the Earth have looked up and seen the shapes of people, animals and everyday objects – they ‘joined the dots’ of the stars to form patterns in the sky. They gave these shapes names, some of which we still use today. But why did they bother with constellations at all? One reason is that having constellations makes it easier to find your way around the sky. This is useful for finding north, or working out the date or the time. When there were no compasses, clocks or watches, this was all very important.
There is another reason why constellations were so important. Imagine going back to a time before paper and pencil had been invented. Life was sparse. If you wanted to draw a picture, you had to scratch it out on a dark cave wall or write it in sand that could blow away. But at night an amazing pattern of bright specks of light would appear above your head. By joining the dots, you could see almost any picture you wanted. You could imagine seeing your favorite shapes in the sky. You might tell others about the constellations you have made up. They might tell others, and your constellation could be passed down from generation to generation for hundreds or even thousands of years. This is how many of the constellations got the names we use.
You don’t see exactly the same part of the sky every night, though between one night and the next, you won’t see much of a difference. Over a few weeks, you’ll definitely notice that you can see some constellations that you couldn’t see before and some that you could see aren’t there anymore. This is because the Earth is moving around the Sun. As the Earth moves round in its orbit, the night of the Earth faces out to different parts of space, where there are different constellations.

Section III. Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage carefully, and then check the correct answer a, b, c, or d.
When the Covid-19 pandemic spread around the globe, many banks took action. The Federal Reserve began to quarantine money, while in some regions of China, banknotes were taken away and disinfected. At the same time, banks encouraged the public to avoid using cash and make electronic payments where possible. In the UK, the number of contactless payments increased by 36% between 2020 and 2021.
Today, many people are embracing the cashless economy. After all, it comes with many advantages. For a start, it’s safer, as cash is easily stolen. Credit and debit cards are too, but it’s possible to trace payments and cancel the cards. Mobile payments are even more secure. As well as that, all your transactions are logged, making record-keeping far simpler. 3
However, it seems as if we are just not ready to say goodbye to cash for good. Recent data shows that cash has made a comeback since the cost of living started to rise steeply. That’s not unusual since people tend to prefer having paper money at hand when times are hard. It was the case during USA’s Great Depression and in Iceland during the Credit Crunch of 2008. Using notes and coins helps people budget, whereas, with electronic payments, it’s harder to keep track of where your money is going.
Even if cash payments do not vanish entirely, our economies are transitioning to become far less reliant on cash than they once were. And while switching to electronic payments is simple and convenient for many people, this isn’t true for everyone. There are concerns about those who rely on cash, such as the homeless, the undocumented or the elderly. An increasing number of stores have stopped accepting cash payments altogether, meaning that such people may become more marginalized.
Despite the popularity of electronic transactions, it’s clear that they won’t become the sole transaction method, at least in the near future. And as companies rush towards finding ever more convenient transaction methods, it’s important not to abandon those who prefer to pay in the traditional way.
21.What is the main idea of the passage?
a. Not every body is ready to say goodbye to cash for good.
b. The number of contactless payments increased by 36%.
c. Electronic transaction is not the sole transaction method.
d. Covid-19 pandemic started a new era in cashless payments.
22.Which of the following is NOT true about transactions?

b. Transactions with cell-phones are logged.
c. Record-keeping is simpler in mobile payments.

b. keeping track of money is easier on their mobile phones
c. they can manage their cost of living better

a. They rely solely on cash money.

Section III. Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage carefully, and then check the correct answer a, b, c, or d.
It weighed about 10,000 tons, entered the atmosphere at a speed of 64,000 km/h and exploded over a city with a blast of 500 kilotons. But on 15 February 2013, we were lucky. The meteorite that showered pieces of rock over Chelyabinsk, Russia, was relatively small, at only about 17 meters wide. Although many people were injured by falling glass, the damage was nothing compared to what had happened in Siberia nearly one hundred years ago. Another relatively small object (approximately 50 meters in diameter) exploded in mid-air over a forest region, flattening about 80 million trees. If it had exploded over a city such as Moscow or London, millions of people would have been killed.
Most scientists agree that comets and asteroids pose the biggest natural threat to human existence. It was probably a large asteroid or comet colliding with Earth which wiped out the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. An enormous object, 10 to 16 km in diameter, struck the Yucatan region of Mexico with the force of 100 megatons. That is the equivalent of one Hiroshima bomb for every person alive on Earth today.
The Earth has been kept fairly safe for the last 65 million years by good fortune and the massive gravitational field of the planet Jupiter. Our cosmic guardian, with its stable circular orbit far from the sun, sweeps up and scatters away most of the dangerous comets and asteroids which might cross Earth’s orbit. After the Chelyabinsk meteorite, scientists are now monitoring potential hazards even more carefully but, as far as they know, there is no danger in the foreseeable future.

The first drawings on walls appeared in caves thousands of years ago. Later the Ancient Romans and Greeks wrote their names and protest poems on buildings. Modern graffiti seems to have appeared in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, and by the late sixties it had reached New York. The new art form really took off in the 1970s, when people began writing their names, or ‘tags’, on buildings all over the city. In the mid seventies it was sometimes hard to see out of a subway car window, because the trains were completely covered in spray paintings known as ‘masterpieces.’
In the early days, the ‘taggers’ were part of street gangs who were concerned with marking their territory. They worked in groups called ‘crews’, and called what they did ‘writing’ – the term ‘graffiti’ was first used by The New York Times and the novelist Norman Mailer. Art galleries in New York began buying graffiti in the early seventies. But at the same time that it began to be regarded as an art form, John Lindsay, the then mayor of New York, declared the first war on graffiti. By the 1980s it became much harder to write on subway trains without being caught, and instead many of the more established graffiti artists began using roofs of buildings or canvases.
The debate over whether graffiti is art or vandalism is still going on. Peter Vallone, a New York city councilor, thinks that graffiti done with permission can be art, but if it is on someone else’s property, it becomes a crime. ‘I have a message for the graffiti vandals out there,’ he said recently. ‘Your freedom of expression ends where my property begins.’ On the other hand, Felix, a member of the Berlin-based group Reclaim Your City, says that artists are reclaiming cities for the public from advertisers, and that graffiti represents freedom and makes cities more vibrant.
For decades graffiti has been a springboard to international fame for a few. Jean-Michel Basquiat began spraying on the street in the 1970s before becoming a respected artist in the ’80s. The Frenchman Blek le Rat and the British artist Banksy have achieved international fame by producing complex works with stencils, often making political or humorous points. Works by Banksy have been sold for over £100,000. Graffiti is now sometimes big business.
